Feeling Overwhelmed, Stressed & Anxious?

I have a few questions for all my entrepreneurs out there – let’s see of any of these apply to your current work life!

  • Have you ever felt like you’re on a treadmill with WAY too many things to do and no way to catch up?
  • Do you feel like you’ve got so much to do that you can’t relax enough to allow your creative energy to flow?
  • Are you tired of feeling anxious and stressed out trying to juggle everything and not having the time to do any one thing well?
  • Do you often find yourself running late, rushing from one appointment to another, continually apologizing for not being on time?
  • Do you feel like if you could just get more organized you could be doing a lot better in your business and making more money?

If you said yes to any or all of the above I’d say that you’re a typical entrepreneur. One of the best aspects of having your own business is the ability to run the show and have total control of what you’re creating – without having to answer to anyone. And while this can be the most rewarding aspect of having your own biz – at the same time it can be the most frustrating and stressful aspect.

Why? Well having a boss in many ways makes it easy for us – we simply do as we’re told and there’s a whole less emotional attachment to what we’re doing. When we’re the boss we tend to want to be in control of everything and our focus and attention gets pulled in a hundred different directions. I know mine does. In addition, without a boss hanging over us we tend to avoid doing the things we don’t like and sometimes those are the things that are going to make us the most profit.

The truth is we can’t run a successful business if we’re not focused and diligent with our time. We have to follow a plan and have good tools that we can use on ourselves when we see our attention being hooked by Facebook or every cool new marketing technique, or if we’re not saying no to all the people who are pulling on our time and attention.

KEEP A GOOD CALENDAR AND DON’T OVERSTUFF STUFF IT!

Overwhelming calendar

Here’s the low-down: No business person should be without one – at least no sane one! There is no way you can possibly be really productive and focused in your business or life without it. I know what I’m saying right now sounds extremely simplistic but I’ve been doing this for over 11 years now and it still amazes me how many coaches do not use a calendar, never mind an actual calendar system – which BTW I feel is the absolute, bar none, can’t do without, secret to any successful person’s life.

I’d like you to ask yourself when looking at your calendar or pile of notes – is your list reasonable? Are you creating your day to purposely fail – in other words is it obvious that there is no way in heaven or hell that you can possibly do everything on your list? It’s important to determine if you’re working hard to sabotage yourself and if so your awareness and self-honesty will help you make another choice.

Also, when you make your list, are you one of those people who as the day goes on keeps adding more and more things onto the list until you can’t keep on schedule and everything is running over, going from one appointment into another until you feel like a hamster on a treadmill with anxiety setting in?

If you’re doing that, you are what I call an official “calendar stuffer” – and that habit can only create drama and stress and needs to stop now! Let me give you an example of this so that we’re really clear here. Also, your agenda needs to be YOUR agenda, not a list of everyone else’s agendas and chores that they’re too lazy or busy to do themselves.

KEEPING YOUR DAY TIME-BLOCKED

Business woman meditatingNow I’d like to talk about using a time-blocked calendar for organizing your entire day so that you build in management and money making activities into your business along with making sure you add in personal time and family time. If you don’t have time for fun and rejuvenation in your life, your passion for your purpose will fizzle out and you’ll be questioning why you’re doing what you’re doing. And none of us want to be there.

So what is a time blocked calendar? Simple. It’s a calendar that allows you to group tasks that use a similar part of your brain together so that you function at your highest level of productivity. This is extremely important from both a medical and practical point of view.

Let me explain. For most folks, they work best when they organize their day according to right brain and left brain activities. Because one of the fastest ways to shut down your creative process is by doing a bunch of technically minded activities and then trying to switch over to creative ones regardless of which is your dominant brain side.

To be clear, your sequential, time-oriented left hemisphere is what you use to get your analytic tasks done in a day and your intuitive, emotional right hemisphere is basically in charge of your creative work. Each of us have a dominant side but we still all must use both every day.

Happy entrepreneurTo put this in a practical application, imagine you want to write a book or create a blog post or work on a package or product you are creating, or write the text for a video series you want to film – all these kinds of tasks should be time-blocked together because they are creative and will require more of your right brain’s participation.

The same would apply if you have to answer emails, do some work figuring out email sequences in your InfusionSoft program, catch up on your accounting, or make some tweaks on your website – anything technical using your analytical left brain should also be blocked together.

Think about it. When you’re working on bookkeeping, do you find it easy to then sit down and start writing creatively? I strongly doubt it. It’s difficult to be in a creative place after your brain has been analytically grinding for hours.

The creative process is about letting go of your thinking and being what I call a channel. That means your connection to infinite consciousness, God, Spirit or whatever words you’re comfortable using, is open fully, and your mind is quiet and receptive. Remember what I shared earlier about what I discovered about myself when my mind was quiet?

Once the mind is out of the way and your internal dialogue quiets down, the channel opens and inspiration strikes as a knowing and then you use your mind to translate that knowing into concepts that others can understand.

successWhen we engage in doing technical tasks that require thinking – that closes the channel. So then, all your creative activities are best scheduled first thing in the morning when you’re fresh out of dreaming and at your most creative and open. You can also encourage this state by taking a break from the technical and going for a hike and getting into nature or by going on a nice long bike ride. Those activities quiet the mind.

If you need to talk to clients, a certain kind energy goes with that type activity, I call it “presence,” and those calls are best done back to back. That way you are in “serving clients mode,” out of your own mind and concerns, and totally present for them. This is also a creative right brained state and you want to make sure you don’t scatter client appointments throughout your day if you want to be at your best.

Most people who have a hard time focusing and getting their work done are suffering from a poorly constructed day filled with a mish-mosh of random activities. For example, they might answer a few emails, then they’re doing some technical work, then they’re running an errand, answering a sales call, and then trying to sit down to do something creative.

Even if they had these activities neatly defined in their calendar and followed them to the “T” they could have gotten almost twice as much done if they had laid their calendar out not by the day, but by the week – time blocking everything in their day so their brain could work in the most efficient and focused way.

In other words if on Tues and Thursday mornings there were 3 hours blocked out just for creative work and then if Mon, Weds, and Fri mornings there was time to do technical work that alone would make a huge impact. Errands or going to the gym could be done in the afternoon when we are typically at a lull because movement wakes us up. If we then make sure we have some emergency and personal time built in that would make the week picture perfect!

Of course there are many other tips and techniques for getting your life more manageable. But the bottom line here is that there’s no reason for any of us to be creating stress, anxiety, and overwhelm in our lives. None. You just have to take action today to make some changes in the way you organize your life – for sure it will be WELL worth it! Let me know if these suggestions worked for you!

When we arrive we’ll unpack, relax, meet in our group, have a fabulous light dinner together and then a restful night’s sleep.

Teotihuacan RetreatThe Dreaming House is our home for 4 nights and in its spacious compound are dozens of rooms decorated with the art of Mexico’s past and present. The rooms have modern conveniences, but no modern annoyances.

Meals are taken family-style in La Cocina (the dining room) and are real country Mexican food prepared with skill and love. The traditional kitchen is staffed by family members, led by your hostess, Veronica Contla Galicia. Two meals (breakfast and early supper) with set menus and bottled water (for rooms and day excursions) are included as well as a light evening snack.

Day 2-4 (b/d/s)

Spiritual Business RetreatWe spend the next 3 days exploring and moving through the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon using the lay of the land to support our process work. A critical component of this trip will be time spent working in group and individually.

ABOUT Sheri:

My personal adventure began in 1998 when I was going through a challenging time in my life. I realized on some level that I had never been truly happy. Although I changed: husbands (twice), cities (five moves), podiatric practices (three different offices) and friends (should we go there?), I still had no real joy in my life.

A leap of faith was the last resort – I sold my practice, boy-friend (only kidding), and home – and closed the surgical residency program I was director of (yes, that was a pretty big deal and yes, the medical community thought I was nuts).

After leaving behind the world of medicine, I spent nearly 8 years on a transformative spiritual quest. But over time, I gained skills + tools to shift my own reality — from the inside out.

My personal exploration and apprenticeship time with don Miguel Ruiz inspired me to write: The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Toltec Wisdom and Banish Mind Spam!.

Personally, I’M TIRED of seeing wonderful – no – fabulously awesome people living mediocre lives fulfilling other people’s dreams rather than creating unlimited abundance (in every direction), amazing success, an extraordinary life, and true wealth in every direction. This journey is my invitation to you to embrace your power and purpose on the deepest level of your being.

HOW to get to Mexico City:

Please fly into Mexico City arriving no later than 3:00pm so that you can make the group transport to our hotel. Going home, we suggest your flight leave no earlier than 2:00pm since you must be at the airport 3 hours ahead and it takes an hour to drive to Mexico City from the hotel.

WHAT’S my Investment?

$1795 USD per person double occupancy.
If you desire a single room, the cost is $175 USD (these rooms are limited).
This is an incredible opportunity at a great price point – so don’t miss it!

**This trip is limited to 12 people MAX due
to the high level of personal interaction.**

A deposit of $500 USD with your trip registration forms is preferred as soon as possible as this trip will fill quickly. Final payment is due: September 1st, 2014.

The top 10 reasons why folks don’t create viable businesses!

Happy entrepreneurOne of the most common questions I get asked as a coach is: How long will it take me to start my business – and by that I mean ANY heart-centered service-orientated business?

Sometimes I think that this is a loaded question – one that I can’t really answer without taking the person who is asking the question into consideration.

Certainly I could give the typical answer – which is to say that it’s very possible to be making a nice income by the end of your first year. But is that going to be YOUR truth?

Hard to say.

When I first started my coaching business in 2003 it was a different world out there. All you had to do was lecture around and you were able to get clients for your workshops and programs.

Woman thinking about coachingToday there’s a whole new paradigm. You have to be internet savvy if you want to have a sustainable and abundant business no matter what you do.

Of course you can just squeak by, but I’m talking about creating the life and business of your dreams, not a life of mediocrity.

It amazes me how many people start out with the dreamy idea of being an entrepreneur and working with people to help them in some way – after all, who doesn’t love being in service and helping others (other than psychopaths)?

It’s sooooooo romantic and fulfilling! Yet the number of people who don’t fulfill their dreams and only make a minimal living from their business is huge.

So why is this?

Simple. No plan. No big idea. No why. No audience.
No discipline. No persistence. No mental fortitude.
No backup. No help. No focus.

So let’s take some time to explore each point so you can make sure you’re really clear so you can deal with any of these issues right from the get-go!

  • #1 – No plan. If you’re creating a business you need a business plan. It’s important to be able to lay out the actions you’re going to take over a one year period (at least). Without knowing your actions how can you possibly get the correct reactions? If no plan is your action, then no outcome is going to be the correct result.
  • #2 – No big idea. Every entrepreneur needs a really cool solution to a seriously annoying issue that their audience is suffering from. That solution is your main signature program that you’re known for. Nope, it doesn’t have to box you in at all – it just has to be the main unique offering that folks get to know you by, the thing that sets you apart from others.
  • #3 – No why. Your audience has to know what gets you pissed off and why you’re doing what you’re doing. Wanting your own business or wanting to help others is not a why. Your why is what is driving you to torture yourself for years to build your business. My why is I detest mediocrity (yuck) – to me it’s selfish to play small and deny others your gift because you’re afraid to live audaciously. If you can’t wrap yourself around that you probably shouldn’t be on my list.  🙂
  • #4 – No audience. If you don’t know specifically who your audience is, how can you expect to speak to them in a language they can understand? And if you’re not serving your people by giving them solutions to their specific problems, then why should they follow you? Goodness knows we all have better things to do than read boring emails about stuff that has nothing to do with us.
  • #5 – No discipline. Don’t get wigged out here. You don’t need a nun standing over you with a ruler ready to beat you. What you need are systems to keep you on track everyday so that you’re consistently taking the actions you listed in your business plan. I believe in a daily time-block calendar to keep people accountable.
  • #6 – No persistence. People who have worked as an employee their whole life have a hard time understanding that starting a business is not like having a job. It is a test of your faith in yourself. Every. Single. Day. By that I mean that most folks quit way before the miracle can happen. There is a tipping point in any business, you need to keep taking action with very few signs of your work bearing fruit until that day when everything changes and you finally have momentum.
  • #7 – No mental fortitude. Mindset is everything in life – at least until your transcend your ego-mind and become enlightened! If you have a whole lot of “I’m not good enough,” “I’ll never make it,” “What if I fail,” and “I don’t really deserve to make 250k a year” in your subconscious mind – what do you think you’re going to create in your life? Nisht as my grandma used to say (means NOT!).
  • #8 – No focus. Wow! I want to podcast! I want to blog! I want to launch a product! I want to do a ton of social media! I want to create and launch a program! I want to do a giveaway! I want to create a telesummit! I want to create a retreat! I want to be a Facebook ads expert! I want to be a speaker! I want to create a 3 day event! I want to write a book! I want to do weekly webinars! I want to institute the newest, shiniest, internet marketing strategy! Really, all in one day??
  • #9 – No backup. Many folks end up never living their dreams because they didn’t have a backup plan. In other words, they quit their job and didn’t have any other means of income while they were building their business. As brave and devoted as that might be, smart it’s not. It takes time to build a business and if you’re focused on financial concerns that worry is going to crush your creativity, joy and passion.
  • #10 – No help. When I decided to become a doctor I went to medical school. In other words I had someone working with me to show me best practices and how to be a good healer. That goes beyond what you can obtain from just reading books. Same in business. Seriously, if you think you can do it on your own without guidance – I don’t think that’s a realistic goal. Since I’ve started I’ve had a coach and I can’t imagine doing otherwise.

So I’m curious what YOU think about this list and what your experience is regarding these 10 touch points. Please post below and let me know your thoughts and feelings – I’d love to hear what’s on YOUR mind.

To your audacious life,

sheri-sig2

Figuring out who you are + what you stand for

I want to get very honest with you about my process
since I re-launched my business January 2013.

The reason I want to share this with you is twofold.

First because I feel the numerous changes that I’ve gone through with my website might be confusing, and because I feel there is a huge lesson that can be learned from my journey. One that might seriously change the way you feel about your business and your process.

You may or may not know that I trained with don Miguel Ruiz author of The Four Agreements for 8 years, taught his work for 10 years and wrote a book on the subject (The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Toltec Wisdom). I truly enjoyed that experience with all my heart.

However as time went on I realized I didn’t want to be a spiritual teacher per se, but instead take all of my life experience and turn it into something that deeply reflected what I love the most – which is helping people create their dream life in the most practical way.

So this is how it went down and I know many of you will be able to relate to this. In January 2013 I launched my new website with the theme being “Awaken Your Inner Alchemist.” I was very excited, got out there and did a few sponsorships at big events – like Suzanne Evan’s – Be The Change, and Lisa Sasavich’s – Speak to Sell. Honestly those events were two of the most challenging things I’ve ever done.

Not because doing a sponsorship is hard – but because no one got what alchemy was or what I was “selling” or talking about. Argggg. I spent a lot of money to find out that people really didn’t resonate with the whole idea – some did, but something wasn’t right. So I decided to talk to a branding person. That was an interesting experience!

Lesson number 1:

Do not go to a branding person until you are really clear about what you want your brand to be, who you are, and what you stand for. Unless the person you are going to is the kind of person that helps you actually figure out who you are – and there is a huge difference.

So now it’s late summer 2013 and I redo the website again to it’s most recent iteration – “Your Rx to Success” which was definitely fun, playing off the fact that I am a doctor. But there was something not quite right about that either and I started to feel a little depressed about it – like I was looking at an aspect of myself but not the whole of me.

I still couldn’t get a grip on what the concept was that would pull everything I stand for under one heading – so to speak. Until I had a conversation with one of my friends from my JV Circle group. For the first time I felt like someone got me and what I was trying to say. So much so that we ended up doing a mini-intensive together and really hashed out the why – why am I doing this and who am I?

Lesson number 2:

Don’t give up on yourself or your dream. Birthing yourself is a process. You may not have the exact answer when you decide to launch your business – BUT LAUNCH ANYWAY. Please. If you wait until you have it “right” you will never do it. Seriously. Clarity only comes from engagement, from action-reaction, from life itself.

I mean this with all my heart – get out there and start someplace. Most people end up changing their positioning several times before they become really well known in their niche. Most of us only see those folks that are well-known and we admire their “stuff” but we don’t think about how many years they’ve been at it honing their message, positioning, their why, and who they are in the world.

Sheri Rosenthal

I’ve watched Mario Forleo evolve over the years – and it’s fascinating to see. The same with Suzanne Evans, Darla LeDoux, Shanta Sumpter, and many other coaches out there. But this goes for any business. How many times have you seen big brands change their positioning or branding – even good old Starbucks (Google the original Starbucks logo to see what I mean)?

So now who am I and what do I stand for?

[arrows style=”arrow-silver-1.png” align=”center”]

I stand for the right for every human to live an audacious life. To stop feeling trapped by jobs, relationships, and limiting beliefs that no longer serve them and are holding them back from being everything they can be in this lifetime. To be free to create the business of their dreams, to travel, to explore the world, to have supportive amazing relationships, to be healthy and happy, to have time freedom, to learn deeply about themselves, to honor themselves spiritually, to give back, to serve the world in a huge way, to get their message out there, and to stop playing small.

Who am I?

I’m the Queen of Audaciousness and all my programs, products, and trips help people attain that audacious lifestyle.

So what can you look forward to?

  • By-monthly calls where we hang out together and I chat for a bit and answer your questions.
  • Upcoming “30 Day Challenge to Banish Overwhelm!” (You can’t have an audacious life if you’re overwhelmed.)
  • Upcoming “How to Create + Run a Retreat You Love + Get Paid for It” 6 week online course. (This is going to be amazing!)
  • More retreats and journeys.
  • Videos will be coming back.

  • Vivacious Life Design: VIP days or 3 day intensives to whip your life back into shape, get you excited and definitely get you out of your trap.
  • I’m open to creating whatever would serve you best. 🙂

I know this was a long post – but I hope that my experience helps you and I welcome you to post your thoughts below. I’d love to know if this helped you in any way in your own process and what you think.

To your audacious life,
sheri-sig2

Feeling a bit beat up by life?

I feel really blessed to be able speak with SO MANY people and hear what’s going on in their lives and businesses. And honestly, one of the more common feelings I hear expressed by folks these days is that they feel like they’ve taken a beating the past few years.

Certainly life has its ups and downsthat’s normal.

beat-upHowever – I believe the key to an awesome life is:

  1. to recognize and ACCEPT that ebbs and flows do occur AND
  2. do our best to structure our lives so that we have the most control over what we can have control of.

So what do I mean by that? Well simply this. When you put your life and welfare into the hands of others it’s easy to feel victimized and down when things don’t go your way.

Creating your own business that you’re in charge of is one of the best ways to take control of your work situation. And learning to take healthy action in the face of adversity is one of the best ways to make that happen in your personal and business life (along with not taking people and situations personally).

So then, what if you do have a business and it’s been “less than voraciously successful?”

What that tells me is that you don’t have a solid business plan to take you from point A to point B OR that you have a plan but have been self-sabotaging your way out of it.

successI have three friends that built businesses from point zero to a million dollars right through this recession. Yes, seriously. They all had a plan and kept taking action until they made it happen. Sure they took actions that crashed and burned from time to time – same in my business – but they kept redirecting until they obtained the results they were looking for.

My theory is if I don’t get the outcome I want in life I can fix it. But if I’m in a situation where I’m not in control it’s much more difficult and often more frustrating. So if I’m going to be in a really painful situation I’d much rather it be of my making!

That attitude keeps me excited about my unpleasant outcomes rather than upset about them. Notice I did not use the word failure because I don’t believe failure exists – only outcomes I didn’t want or didn’t expect.

Since I never fail I never have to beat myself up, I just redirect, learn and move on. Life can present us with plenty of situations that slap us upside the head – but without all the judgment about what I did, what I didn’t do, what I should have done, what I could have done, what I did compared to what someone else did, blah, blah, blah – I can remain on task, happy, and in control.

After all, the way I choose to see anything in my life is the ultimate expression of my control right?

We’ve all had a year – or years – where one difficult situation after another occurred. But I promise you that if you take control of what you can in your life (your attitude especially), you’ll be able to keep your head totally above water no matter what life sends your way.

And if you do that I guarantee you’ll no longer feel beat up by life either.

I’d love to hear if you’ve been feeling beat up by life and what you’ve been doing to get yourself on track again. And if you don’t have a plan for getting control of your life – now that you’ve read this are you inspired to get control and take action again? Let me know below!

To the end of mediocrity!
